Tell us about yourself
I am Michela Yette. Born in Cameroon, I moved to France after high school, where I studied Architecture. After graduating from the school of Architecture of Paris-Seine, I went back to Cameroon. I worked for a while for big corporations and also owned a company called Art & Habitat.
Looking for new challenges, I moved to California more than a decade ago, where I am established as an interior designer specialized in high end kitchen and bathrooms. I am the owner of “Art in Habitat”. I also work for other trade companies.
My creations are very African rooted. They are also enriched by what I have learned and observed throughout my journey around the world. I want them to reflect the African contemporary way of living.
Why did you join Mbai Bassa Community?
As one of the founders of Mbai Bassa California, a social group whose goal is to promote solidarity and cultural ties among the Bassa Bati Mpoo living in the San Francisco Bay area, it was natural for me to join Mbai Bassa Community. As a California public charity corporation, Mbai Bassa Community provides us the right vehicle to give back to our communities in Cameroon and to our local communities here in the USA.
I serve as a board member and Vice President of projects. I am also a proud member of its Kine Bisai club. My role in the leadership team is to coordinate the evaluation and selection of projects. As board member, I help to raise funds, validate our strategy for the long term and make sure we comply with federal and the state of California public charity corporation governance rules.
What are you passionate about outside work and Mbai Bassa Community?
I am a lover of beauty, fashion, and culinary creations. Usually on weekend , I enjoy hiking with friends and family on random trails throughout the San Francisco Bay area and visiting Art exhibitions such as contemporary painting and sculpture. I also like listening to music, dancing , socializing and travelling.
Any final thought?
I am very proud of what we have been able to accomplish since Mbai Bassa Community launching in 2021. The social impact is real. This would have not been possible without our collaboration with our sister organization Ndap I Maten of Arizona and validates that our strategy from the outset to collaborate with other organizations is the right one. Now that Covid 19 is manageable, we can enhance our engagement with local communities and institutions such schools, churches and municipalities. I am very excited about the possibility of making a real difference in the field and where it matters most. I invite all to join us especially through our Bisai clubs, which give you the flexibility to contribute at a level that is meaningful to you.
