Our Story

We were founded by the Bassa Bati Mpoo Diaspora in the West Coast of the USA and their friends

Mbai Bassa Community is a California 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity corporation (EIN: 85-1787874). It was founded in May 2020 by members of the Grand Sanaga region of Cameroon diaspora in the West Coast of the USA and their friends. The ultimate goal is to support a thriving and more equitable Grand Sanaga region of Cameroon through sustainable actions in education, basic clean water and preventive healthcare infrastructures and micro-economic projects.

Mbai Bassa Community welcomes all people who share and are committed to advancing its vision and mission, regardless of their place of origin or residence.

We the founders of Mbai Bassa Community are driven by the following shared beliefs:

  • Our communities have made enormous sacrifices to provide us with solid educational foundations that have prepared us to be successful. We owe them a great debt of gratitude.
  • Our new home offers us tremendous opportunities to become the successful people we aspire to be.
  • We are in a unique position to be able to give back to our impoverished communities in a way that enables them to sustainably improve their living conditions and become self sufficient in the long term.
  • We need to build a thriving community here in the USA to be able to help our communities in Cameroon in an effective and meaningful way.
  • We believe that by working together persistently and incrementally, we can achieve bold and transformative goals even when they may appear at the outset too difficult to tackle.
  • Knowing who we are, our culture, traditions and history, and being able to educate the public about them, allow us to engage with confidence, mutual understanding and an open mind other communities to build lasting and mutually beneficial relationships.

The Grand Sanaga region of Cameroon includes the Sanaga-Maritime, Nyong et Nkelle and Nkam divisions. It is home to Bassa, Bati and Mpoo Bantu ethnic groups. They are believed to have originated from the Nile Valley in the Ancient Egypt. After successive migrations they settled in the Atlantic coast of Central and West Africa. In Cameroon the total population is about 250000 individuals.

Bassa Bati Mpoo people have a rich culture and traditions. “Ngog Lituba”, or “Pierced Stone”, is considered the cradle of Bassa Mpoo Bati people of Cameroon. The legend is that the Bassa took refuge inside the rock to escape extermination. Therefore, they owe their survival to Ngog-Lituba. That is why Bassa, Bati and Mpoo people from Cameroon refer to themselves as Mbog Liaa or People from the Pierced Stone.
